How English to Chinese Website Translation Is Properly Accomplished

The translation of a website from one language to another must be undertaken carefully to ensure that all of the content is faithful to the original. The audience of the second language should comprehend the translated content easily and comfortably. This is usually the hard part of translation of a website from English into Chinese. There are different and often unique expressions in the Chinese language that describe an object, a thing, an event or a phenomenon. In many cases, these expressions do not have exact English equivalents. It is essential to clearly communicate with your Chinese audience using expressions they are familiar with. Ineffecient translation into the Chinese language could result in unintended associations or even irritation. If you are trying to market your Web site to a Chinese audience, make sure that the translation means what you intend to communicate.

Software Can’t Do It

When President George W. Bush’s 2004 Inauguration speech was translated by software from English to Chinese and published on the White House website, the resulting script read to Chinese audiences as if it had been prepared by an elementary school student.

An international hotel reservation site was recently translated into Chinese from English. On the English site, the webmaster used “Escape” to mean that the hotel and resorts in Southeast Asia are a destination for relaxation, as in “a wonderful escape.” However, when it was directly translated into Chinese, the word “Escape” was read as “Flee from a disaster.” Unfortunately, this website was launched after the Asian Tsunami. Not many visitors to the Chinese site will dare make a reservation at a resort in Southeast Asia associated with “fleeing from disaster.”
